1999 Hunting Trips Reports
By
11/13/99 Goose Hunt
Three officers, three members, and one first time guest (seven total participants) had a great time at our first ever Goose Hunt held on 11/13/99 with the W.S. Sherrill Waterfowl Company near Wharton. A total of 34 geese were shot. We shot our limit of Speckle Bellies (16) and bagged 18 Snows. The Snows were much harder to decoy. It’s too bad that we couldn’t shoot more Specks because they were practically landing on us.
9/24/99 – 9/26/99 Fall Dove Retreat
Sixty two men and boys (60 hunters) attended the 9th Annual Fall Dove Retreat on 9/24/99 – 9/26/99 on Lee Ewald’s property near Dilley. This was our fourth highest overall attendance and probably our highest number of hunters. Twenty hunters were first time guests!
The hunting was great with many hunters limiting out on Friday and Saturday. The hunt followed the usual pattern: Friday was the best, followed by Saturday and then Sunday.
Mr. Ewald led us in a memorable Praise and Worship Service on Saturday evening. We sang until we were hoarse! Many thanks to Eddy Chance for finding this lease and for his many hours of work in making this hunt happen.
4/23/99 – 4/24/99 Hog Hunt
Three NAC officers, Two SAC officers, four NAC members, and three NAC youth members participated (12 total participants) at the 4/23/99 – 4/24/99 Hog Hunt at the 32,000 acre Pierce Ranch near El Campo. Gun hunters hunted from box stands or tripods. Bow hunters hunted from tripods.
Warren Hoke took a nice boar. Larry Dowden shot three hogs (we found two). Eddy Chance shot one with his bow and one with Larry’s carbine. We found the one shot by the rifle, but the arrowed hog went swimming across a river. Tim Price killed a nice shallot (young pig). Finally the Rabbit Slayer is now known as the Hog Slayer (aka Dennis Koch) because he killed his first pig!
The mosquitoes were thick, but everyone came prepared with lots of OFF!
