9/9/12 Self-chartered Bass Fishing Trip

One officer and one member (two total participants)  had a great time at the 9/9/12 Self-chartered Bass Fishing Trip on Lake Travis.  Randy Rowley caught five bass and one blue catfish.  Roy Brigman caught three bass.  All nine fish were caught on Rapala Rattlin’ Rapala bass colored 1/2 ounce lipless crankbaits.  We launched near Point Venture and fished boat docks and clifts.

8/31/12 – 9/2/12 Self-chartered Saltwater Fishing Trip @ Port O’Connor

Two officers and two members (four total participants) had a great time at the 8/31/12 – 9/2/12 Self-chartered Salwater Fishing Trip at Port O’Connor.  We fished from Daryl Shipper’s 21′ boat.  Tim Price caught a 40″ bull redfish.  It took him a good 20 minutes to reel it in.  Daryl caught a 32″ bull redfish.  Daryl, Tim, and Chris Rowley caught black tip sharks.  Randy Rowley brought a black tip shark to the surface but it turned and cut his line.  The group also caught speckled trout, mangrove snappers, lady fish, gafttop catfish, hardhead catfish, rock fish, and a crab.  Randy had a spanish mackeral on the surface but it got off before we could net it.  The surf at the outside jetties was rough.  Seasickness patches are recommended the next time that we do this.  We stayed at the Salty Dog lodge (a nice house) and had several fine meals.

8/18/12 Self-chartered Bass Fishing Trip on Lake Bastrop

Two officers and one member (three total participants) had a good time at the 8/18/12 Self-chartered Bass Fishing Trip on Lake Bastrop. It was a very cloudy evening and cool for August (it had rained hard earlier in the day). We were skunked.

6/30/12 Self-chartered Bass Fishing Trip

One officer and two members (three total participants) had a good time at the 6/30/12 Self-chartered Bass Fishing Trip to Lake Bastrop. Randy Rowley caught two bass and had another one come off as he was pulling it into his boat. Burl Fulenwider caught one and had a nice catfish come off before we could net it. Charles Cutchens had two on but lost them both before he could boat them. It was a pretty slow morning until we ran into some schooling bass on the way back to the boat ramp.

6/19/12 Self-chartered Bass Fishing Trip

One officer and one member (two total participants) had a good time at the 6/19/12 Self-chartered Bass Fishing Trip to Lake Travis. Paul Irwin caught five bass and missed about that many. Randy Rowley caught one bass and missed four, including one that took his fluke and hook. Paul also caught the biggest bass.

6/18/12 Self-chartered Bass Fishing Trip

One officer and two members (three total participants) had a good time at the 6/18/12 Self-chartered Bass Fishing Trip to Lake Decker. Jeff Cates caught a 20″ long bass. Randy Rowley caught a large perch on a crankbait. Bill Smith was skunked.

5/26/12 Self-chartered Bass Fishing Trip

One officer and two members (three total participants) had a good time at the 5/26/12 Self-chartered Bass Fishing Trip to Lake Bastrop on Randy Rowley’s boat. It started out overcast and the topwater bite lasted for quite a while. Randy landed one 2 1/2 lb and one 1 1/2 lb bass. Stephen Marlow landed a 1 1/2 lb. bass. All of their fish were caught on top water lures. Burl Fulenwider hooked a large (around 7 lb. blue catfish) on a crankbait but it got off the hook as Stephen was trying to net it.

President’s note: Randy, Stephen, and Burl were set to go on the 3/24/12 Self-guided White Bass Fishing Trip, but decided to postpone it do to iffy fishing reports. This was their make up trip.

5/21/12 Chartered Hybrid Bass Fishing Trip

Three officers and three members (six total participants) had a good time at the 5/21/12 Chartered Hybrid Bass Fishing Trip on Lake Belton with guide Jay Garrett. There was almost no wind, which prevented the boat from drifting. Consequently we did not do as well as we normally do. We caught 11 keeper hybrid bass, three keeper white bass, and one large crappie. We also caught several other hybrid’s but they were not keepers (most of them were an inch short of the legal limit (18″).

3/24/12 Self-chartered White Bass Fishing Trip

One member and two guests (three total participants) had a good time on the 3/24/12 Self-chartered White Bass Fishing Trip on the San Gabriel River off of Granger Lake. Greg Moerbe and Scott Timpany both caught a couple of white bass. They reported that the river was crowded with fishermen but they were able to find a seculed spot. The fish seemed to be on or near the surface. Greg caught his fish on a fly rod. Scott used a 1/16 ounce Strike King Pro series bait. It has a black jig head with a 2 inch green and white shad. One was tied at the end of the line and the other 15 inches higher. That means you lose two at a time when you cast into the overhanging branches. :^)

Scott caught one on Sunday and his neighbor caught five using small tube jigs – red and pink heads retrieved slowly while near the surface.
