2018 – Banquet

A record 29 participants had a great time at the Annual FCS Family Banquet on 3/28/18 at Texas Land & Cattle. The food and the venue were great! We had a private room and were able to order from the menu and pay separately. TJ Greaney founder of Kids Outdoor Zone (KOZ), host of The Outdoor Zone Radio Network, and past president of the Texas Outdoor Writers Association shared his testimony and his primary ministry (KOZ). The following awards were given for 2017:
- Largest Freshwater Fish Caught – Vince Berry – 29” Striped Bass on the 5/8/17 Chartered Striped/Hybrid Bass Fishing Trip on Lake Buchanan. This was the second largest freshwater fish measured on an FCS event, behind a 34” striped bass caught by Jim McGee. Vince was presented with a certificate and the book A Look at Life from the Riverbank by Steve Chapman.
The following people also landed fish noteworthy freshwater fish:
Burl Fulenwider – 18 ¼” black bass on 6/19/17 on Lake Bastrop
Jim McGee – 17 ¾” black bass on 6/19/17 on Lake Bastrop
- Largest Saltwater Fish Caught – Wayne Weilnau – 30” Shark on the 6/23/17 – 6/25/17 Self-chartered Bay Fishing Trip on Matagorda Bay. Wayne was presented with a certificate and the book A Look at Life from a Deer Stand by Steve Chapman.
The following people also landed noteworthy saltwater fish:
Daryl Shipper caught a 20” speckled trout on same trip
Randy Rowley caught a 19” speckled trout on the same trip
- Largest Hog Taken – Michael Armstrong – 240 lbs. on the 4/23/17 – 4/25/17 Semi-guided Hog Hunt near Gonzales. This was the fourth largest hog taken on an FCS event, behind a 300 lb. hog taken by Randy Rowley, a 280 lb. hog taken by Ronnie Ross, and a 250 lb. hog taken by Joey Burgi.
- Most Improved Average in Sporting Clays from 2016 to 2017 – Mike Walsh – 9.6 birds (from 33.14/50 over 7 shoots to 42.74/50 over 8 shoots, which is an increase of 28.97%. Mike was presented with an FCS certificate and a certificate for a one-year membership at Copperhead Creek Shooting Club (a $350.00 value).
The following people improved their averages by at least 2 birds, with a minimum of 5 shoots:
Gustavo Bultron – 6.17 birds (from 30.50/50 to 36.67/50, which is an increase of 20.23%
Paul Ellis – 5.18 birds (from 33.73/50 to 38.91/50, which is an increase of 15.36%
Burl Fulenwider – 3.72 birds (from 27.14/50 to 30.86/50), which is an increase of 13.71%
Bruce Crockett – 3.60 birds (from 38.78/50 to 42.38/50), which is an increase of 9.28%
Steve Baker – 3.60 birds (from 41.40/50 to 45.00/50), which is an increase of 8.70%
Scott Timpany – 2.60 birds (from 36.90/50 to 39.50/50), which is an increase of 7.05%
- Most Sporting Clays Wins in 2017 – Steve Baker – 6 out of 9 shoots (67%). Steve will be presented with an FCS certificate and a certificate for 100 clay targets at Capitol City Trap & Skeet Club at the 5/12/18 FCS Open Sporting Clays Shoot.
This is the third most wins in one year and is the third best percentage of wins at shoots at Capitol City in one year:
Randy Rowley won 8/11 shoots in 2009 (73%)
Steve Baker won 7/9 shoots in 2015 (78%)
Randy Rowley won 7/10 shoots in 2010 (70%)

- Highest Sporting Clays Average in 2017 – Steve Baker – 45/50 for 10 shoots. To put this in perspective, until Randy Rowley shot a 45/50 on 9/26/09, the highest FCS score at Capitol City for 16 years was a 43/50. Steve averaged in 2017 what was the high score for 16 years. Steve will be presented with an FCS certificate and a certificate for a one-year membership at Copperhead Creek Shooting Club (a $350.00 value) at the 5/12/18 FCS Open Sporting Clays Shoot.
The following people had averages over 35, with a minimum of 5 shoots:
