2001 Hunting Trips Reports

11/9/01 – 11/10/01 Goose/Duck Hunt
To say that the 3rd annual Goose/Duck hunt, held on 11/10/01, was a great hunt is an understatement. We had two groups hunting for ducks and one for geese. Larry Dowden’s duck hunting group shot 35 ducks and 11 geese. Ron Denison’s duck hunting group did just as well. There were nine duck hunters in all and eight goose hunters (17 total participants). The goose hunters shot 119 geese! That’s almost 15 geese each and almost four times more than the 34 geese that we shot in 1999! Check out the pictures in the photo album. If you missed this hunt, you missed a hunt for the ages.
9/21/01 – 9/23/01 Fall Dove Retreat
Thirty five participants, including our first female dove hunter at a Dove Retreat (Ken Hamilton’s daughter, Kerri) had a great time at the 10th Annual Fall Dove Retreat on 9/21/01 – 9/23/01 on Lee Ewald’s properties near Dilley. Everyone limited out on Friday (I, Randy Rowley, did in 35 minutes after the birds started flying). Saturday was tougher hunting, but several limits were taken. A storm came in Saturday afternoon and made things real interesting. Birds that were flying with the wind probably were pushing 100 MPH. Those stupid enough to fly into the wind were barely doing 10 MPH! One of my doubles was two birds that seemed like they were suspended by strings while trying to fly into that wind. Sunday was all goofed up due to the storm. Ron Denison was the only one who limited out, but he had to stay out until 11:45 AM! Thanks to Derrich Pollock who led us in a Bible Study on Saturday night. There were also five rattlesnakes killed on the property, including a five footer.
3/23/01 – 3/25/01 Hog Hunt
Three hunters (two SAC officers and one NAC officer) had a great time at the 3rd Annual Hog Hunt on March 23 – 25, 2001 at the El Potrillo Ranch near Cross. Both David Chalmers and I, Randy Rowley, are pig-less no more. David shot a nice 120 pound boar as well as another one that we couldn’t find. I shot two Javelinas. I also shot two male rattlesnakes that were fighting (both five footers)! Although we did not see lots of hogs, we had the 3000 acre ranch to ourselves and could hunt any way that we wanted, including night hunting.
1/5/01 – 1/7/01 Winter Dove Retreat
Seven hunters (one officer, two members, two youth members, and two guests) had a great time at the 8th Annual Winter Dove Retreat on 1/5/01 – 1/7/01 Dove Hunt on a Dove Master’s lease near Pearsall. We didn’t have enough hunters – the birds kept landing in the field, and we had to send the boys into the field to stir them up.
