Sign now – Protect Port Aransas!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

The Port of Corpus Christi Authority (PCCA) is proposing to build a supertanker port at Harbor Island in Port Aransas to service very large crude carriers (VLCCs), each of which holds 2 million gallons and is larger than the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise.  Then they’d dredge the ship channel from its current 47 feet to 75-85 feet, generating 56.5 million cubic yards of spoil, risking an oil spill next to a critical estuary, creating congestion in a narrow inlet, and endangering the fishing and tourism industries on which Port Aransas depends. Raul Pena is a member of the Austin Gun Club, a private hunting preserve on a 1,000 acre ranch south of Lampasas, specializing in quail, pheasant, and chukar hunts (we had an upland bird hunt and a 5-stand/flurry shoot there years ago).  He is looking for a group of up to four to hunt upland birds with him there.  The cost will be the cost of the birds – around $125.  Let Raul know if you’re interested at raul.c.pena@gmail.com or 210-364-0720.

An interesting article comparing Vortex, Sightron, and Bushnell scopes (although they should have also included Nikon). I’ve owned all three and favor Vortex because of their Forever Warranty.

Dick’s Sporting Goods just sent another loud message that it is anti-gun and anti-hunting. I, Randy Rowley, stopped shopping there when they announced their AR-15 ban. Now, I’m announcing that I will not post any Dick’s sales, events, etc. on this website. They are clearly our enemy. See

Just look at the fishing excitement that we miss out on by living in Texas – https://www.theoutdoorwire.com/releases/8bdab19d-0301-459f-853e-3be9041a7167. What’s really amazing is a number of them decided to swim for shore in the frigid waters instead of waiting for the Coast Guard.

Heck of a waterfowl ammo deal!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Here’s a deal on 12 gauge 3″ chamber Federal waterfowl shells in BB or 2 shot at Rogers – https://www.rogerssportinggoods.com/ammunition/shotgun-shells/steel-non-toxic-shells/federal-steel/speed-shok/federal-speed-shok-steel-waterfowl-12-gauge-3-1-1-8-oz.html – $99.99 for a case and a $20/case rebate (net of $79.99 or $7.99/box).  That’s $3.50/box cheaper than Academy’s sale price.  The rebate is good on these shells through 12/31/18.  Shipping is free on orders over $100, so you’ll have to buy something else for at least .01 to get the free shipping (for example, Randy Rowley bought a pair of foam ear plugs for $2.99 to get his bill over $100 and get the free shipping). Yeti and the 2nd Amendment

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Yeti Coolers has severed ties with the NRA Foundation and dropped its sponsorship of Friends of the NRA banquets around the country.  Many pro-2nd Amendment groups consider Yeti giving the Bird to hunters.  See http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2018/04/daniel-zimmerman/yeti-coolers-drops-nra-affiliation-rtic-coolers-steps-right-in/.

However, Yeti has a different take on how this went down.  See http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/04/24/yeti-calls-nra-claims-inaccurate-says-it-has-unwavering-belief-in-second-amendment.html.

This may be, as Cool Hand Luke famously stated, a failure to communicate.  At the very least, with several businesses pulling the plug on the NRA, it is bad timing on Yeti’s part.

Samson Society Men’s Group

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Do you have a group of men you can be ‘rot gut honest‘ about your struggles and needs?  All men are fighting against sin in their lives, and many are losing because they don’t have “Traveling Partners” to share the journey, gain encouragement, and biblical support.  Samson Society is a men’s group that supports men in their Christian discipleship and fight against sin, such as isolation, depression, anger, marital issues, sexual temptations and failures, substance abuse, online gaming, and more.  There are two Samson groups in Austin.  One meets at FM 620 & FM 2222 on Thursday nights and the other meets at Wells Branch (North Austin/RR) on Tuesday nights.  If you want to learn more, call FCS member, Mike Hardcastle at 512-423-8710 or visit their website at:  https://sites.google.com/site/samsonnorthaustin/home.

The bottom line is if you have cuts on your body you should consider avoiding wade fishing in coastal water and eating raw oysters.  Some coastal fishermen are now using breathable waders while fishing (of course, they won’t help if you have cuts above your chest, including on your arms/hands).  See http://www.al.com/news/index.ssf/2015/06/health_officials_warn_of_flesh.html for more information.

Holy Smoke LLC will, for a price, load cremated human ash into shotgun shells and rifle and pistol cartridges.  For $850 they will load one pound of ash into 250 shotgun shells, mixing the ash into the cups that hold the shot.  The same amount of ash will fill the bullets of 100 standard caliber center-fire rifle rounds or 250 pistol rounds.  The put the ash in the tips of hollow point bullets and seal the cavity with wax.  Tim Godwin, a Montgomery, Alabama landscaping company owner and avid hunter, says he sees no problem with the practice.  “People have had their ashes sprinkled in rivers and the ocean, there have been ashes spread out of airplanes,” he said.  “If you love hunting or the outdoors, this really isn’t much different.”  For more information see www.myholysmoke.com.

Reflections of a New Deer Hunter

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Eric Liu’s story of his first deer hunt with Bret Mercer last November at Bret’s parents-in-law’s ranch near Comanche has been published in “The Truth About Guns” (a great news gathering site about all things gun).  The story is about God’s goodness, Christian fellowship, and the joys of hunting.  One commenter noted, as you said, that my hunting career goes all downhill from here on out.  See:

Smart Phones Sportsmen’s Apps

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Randy Rowley recommends:

  • AccuWeather (includes sunrise and sunset info)
  • Bass Fishing Diary (helps you remember the date, time, location, various weather and water conditions, lure, etc. surrounding your big catch)
  • Ducks Unlimited (includes many of the features from the DU website)
  • Fishing knots (shows in detail how to tie many useful knots)
  • iHunt Calls: 600 hunting calls (allows you to play them over external speakers)
  • Shooting Hours Sunrise Sunset (you can set an alert for when you can start shooting and when you must stop)
  • Smart Compass (even works in the dark)
  • Super-Bright LED Flashlight (turns your smart phone into a very bright flashlight – use sparingly because it drains your battery fast)
  • Trimble GPS Fish Free – formerly known as Cabelas Recon Fish (records fishing trips; keeps a daily report of your catches; marks waypoints for docks, fishing hotspots, underwater features, tracks your boat drifts, trolling paths, and routes from one location to another; has topo, aerial, and street maps, basic weather reports, sun and moon phases; tracks mileage and compass directions)
  • Trimble GPS Hunt Free (records hunting trips; keeps a daily report of your kills; marks stands/blinds, feeders, rubs, scrapes, etc.; has topo, aerial, and street maps, basic weather reports, sun and moon phases; tracks mileage and compass directions)
  • Waterfowl Call (includes both duck and goose calls – helps hunters master the various calls)

These can be found by serching your service provider’s “Play Store” or equivalent, https://play.google.com/apps, and https://play.google.com/store/apps.

Let Randy know your recommendations at randywrowley@gmail.com.
