One officer, three members, four guests, and one son (nine total participants) had a great time at the 8/23/12 – 8/24/12 Student Instructor/Student Sporting Clays Shoot at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio.

Report from Stephen Marlow

We had a great time Thursday at NSSC.
We had college-age new instructors with quite a bit of variation between them.  We were split up and rotated instructors throughout the day.
Vance, the master instructor, had fun with me and my “rifle shooting” tendencies.  It was a very good lesson for the kids as they will probably see a lot of their students who started out with rifles.
Actually learned a lot with them correcting my stance all day.  Did really well with the clays and found two presentations that will need more practice.

Report from Darryl Swann

It went really well.  We were split up of course but we ate lunch together.  Caleb and I each shot between 350 and 400 rounds.  We were sore for three days.  Even my trigger finger was sore.  I think we learned some stuff.  It might translate into more dove.

8/18/12 Sporting Clays Shoot

Two officers and one guest (three total participants) had a good time at the 8/18/12 Sporting Clays Shoot at the Capitol City Trap & Skeet Club. It was an overcast morning and cool for August. We shot a 10-station Corporate Course that they had set up the day before. We shot whatever the signs said (true pairs, on-report outgoing bird first, etc.). The course offered a good selection of birds and two rabbits! We only had trouble with one top-of-a-telephone pole launched target where we went collectively 1 for 9. Randy Rowley came in first place with 39/50. Bruce Crockett came in second place with 36/50. Scott Timpany came in third place with 35/50. Each shooter won a box of donated shotgun shells. Bruce led us in prayer.

8/11/12 Clay Target Shoot

Two officers and two members (four total participants) had a great time at the Legacy Outfitters Clay Target Shoot at a ranch near Georgetown.  Tim Price came in second place in the Knock Out (Annie Oakley) competition and won four rounds.  Randy Rowley won two rounds.  We would like to thank Legacy Outfitters for inviting us to join them.

8/4/12 Shooting Range Shoot

One officer, two members, one guest, and one son (five total participants) had a good time at the 8/4/12 Shooting Range Shoot at the Eagle Peak Shooting Range near Jonestown.  The range was packed.  When Randy Rowley got there at 10:10 AM the line to get in was all the way out into the parking lot.  Despite the crowd, participants were able to shoot rifles, a shotgun, and pistols – it just took longer than normal.

7/21/12 Youth 5-stand and Skeet Shoot followed by an FCS Sporting Clays Shoot

Six officers, two members, six guests (including four first time guests), two youth sons, and 10 youth from Kids Outdoor Zone (KOZ; 24 total participants) had a great time at the 7/21/12 Youth 5-stand and Skeet Shoot followed by an FCS Sporting Clays Shoot. Five youth shot 5-stand and five youth shot skeet. There were four KOZ adult helpers. It was hot, partly cloudy, and there wasn’t much of a breeze. FCS paid for these youth’s shells and their shoot fees from the ministry budget. We also gave away a T-shirt to the 5-stand winner and a T-shirt to the skeet winner.

For sporting clays we shot “on-report” on the Hunter Course. Ron Denison and Randy Rowley tied for first place with 39/50. Mark Dillow came in second place with 37/50. The ranch features a field that is 900 yards long by 200 yards wide. The group fired a lot of ammo, poked a lot of holes in targets, and even managed to hit the gongs at 900 yards about a dozen times! The fish were biting and we had about a dozen fish caught with very limited effort. Paul Irwin fished for about 5 minutes and caught three, Scott Morris fished for about five minutes and caught one with a topwater, and Burl Fulenwider caught the rest in about an hour of fishing. We shot on-report pairs on the hunter course. We had to deal with a north wind that made the targets flatter, faster, and do crazy things. Scott Timpany came in first place with 39/50. Five officers, one member, four guests, two sons, and one youth guest (13 total participants) had a good time at the 2/11/12 ‘Spread the Love (Broken Clay Targets) Around’ Sporting Clays Shoot at the Capitol City Trap & Skeet Club on a cold and very windy day. We shot the Hunter course. It had been reset and was harder than it had been. The wind greatly affected the targets and kept the scores down. Ron Denison and I, Randy Rowley, tied for first place with 31/50. I went 2/8 on our last station, which put Ron in a position to tie if he broke all of his final eight targets – he did! Harold Terry and Jake Denison tied for second place with 29/50 (it was Jake’s high score) . Bruce Crockett came in third place with 28/50. He was followed by Justin Dillow and Scott Timpany with 27/50 (Justin’s high score), Ken Miller with 24/50, Alex Denison with 23/50 (his second best score), Mark Dillow with 22/50, first time guest Carson Chandler with 17/50, and Becky Terry with 15/50. Tori Denison pulled targets for one group. I led us in a devotional titled Stand Fast. Ron, Jake, Alex, Carson, and I shot on report pairs and some in Bruce’s group shot a few true pairs.

1/21/12 Promatic Open Sporting Clays Tournament (report by Bruce Crockett)
One officer, two members, and one guest (four total participants) had a great time at the 1/21/12 Promatic Open Sporting Clays Tournament at the Capitol City Trap & Skeet Club. It was a tough course, and the scores reflected it for a lot of shooters. I shot my worst score so far (46/100). Scott Timpany went from an 87/100 in the last tournament to a 57/100. Paul Ellis shot a 65/100 and Brian Suter had a 64/100, so they shot close to their normal scores. There were a lot of long crossers, so if you have problems with those type of shots, then you were in trouble. Note on their link ( http://capitolclays.com/scores/120121.htm) how many Master level shooters shot in the 60’s. Randy Barrington, a Master level shooter who usually shoots in the mid-80’s to around 90 in a typical tournament, shot a 67/100. Tony Rivera, the 2006 National Sporting Clays Champion, was there and shot a 90/100 for 2nd place.

1/14/12 ‘Clay Targets Covered with Ice Sickles’ Sporting Clays Shoot

One officer, four members and five guests (10 total participants) had a good time at the 1/14/12 ‘Clay Targets Covered with Ice Sickles’ Sporting Clays Shoot at the Capitol City Trap & Skeet Club. Ron Palmer came in first place with 38/50. Paul Ellis and Edward Terry tied for second place with 36/50. Scott Timpany came in third place with 35/50. He was followed by Bret Mercer with 33/50, Harold Terry with 26/50, Tricia Palmer with 24/50, and Ken Miller with 17/50. The names of two others guests were lost. Harold Terry has joined the 500 Club, breaking 510 targets.
