4/5/13 – 4/6/13 24-hour Sporting Clays Shoot (by Shelly Corbin)

With bags packed and trucks loaded with necessary supplies; guns, more guns, ammo and more ammo three officers, two members, and one guest (six total participants) left Austin and headed south on IH-35 traveling to the best kept secret in Texas – the 74 Ranch, near Campbelton, for the much talked about epic 24 hour sporting clays shoot.  Four shooters were repeat customers and two were first timers.

We arrived just before noon on Friday morning.  The weather could not have been better, a beautiful Texas Spring day, blue skies and perfect temperatures!  Pulling onto the 27,000 acre ranch was a magnificent sight.  As far as the eye could see was gorgeous Texas country.  The anticipation of roaming the land, shooting guns and making life long memories with friends was boiling up!

We were greeted by Milo as we unloaded our vehicles.  With bags and guns in tow we made our way to our rooms.  Quickly unpacked and met for our first meal.  Enjoyed the most amazing Turkey Sandwich with a Salad Bar packed full of all the extras!  With belly’s full and soda in hand we ventured out for the first time.  Loading our guns and selves on to our cart we traveled out across the ranch.   As you make your way to each station you are surrounded by breathtaking sights of God’s creation.   Each station was adventure on its own.   Pulling random targets as fast as we could, allowing each of us the experience of blasting them to pieces!

Dinner time rolled around and we gathered for another amazing meal.  The staff provided perfectly grilled steak and shrimp for all of us to enjoy, and we enjoyed!  As you expect, the country cooking and the Texas hospitality led us to want for nothing.  Meals were amazing, drinks were plentiful, and snacks were available throughout our stay.  We never went hungry and we wanted for nothing.  We were privileged to experience true Texas hospitality at its best.

After dinner we  ventured back out to shoot some more!  We roamed the property, shot some targets and enjoyed the fellowship outside until the sun went down.   When night came we headed back in ready for some fellowship and fun.  Finding ourselves in a “Mans Cave” provided us many opportunities for fun… pool tables, poker tables, big screen, video games, arcade games and more.  With competitive spirit in check we began the games!  A few of us chose to turn in early while some of us spent the night acting like teenagers again… playing video games well into the night.

Morning brought another country cooking meal to fill our bellies.  After a hearty breakfast we gathered are guns and ammo and headed out for a few more hours of shooting!  The weather was almost perfect… God blessed us with a breeze slightly more than the day before… giving us a bit of a challenge on our aim but we conquered the breeze and many more targets were blasted away by the perfect aim of each of our shots!

Sadly, all good things must come to an end.  After enjoying our final meal at we loaded our vehicles and headed north to Austin.  Traveling north with memories of a lifetime and dreams of our return to the 74 Ranch.
