6/7/08 San Gabriel River Fishing Trip
Three officers and one member (four participants) had a good time at the 6/7/08 Fishing Trip on the beautiful San Gabriel River near Georgetown. Mark Dillow and Kevin Wall each caught about 10 perch and new member James Bean caught two perch on their fly rods. Randy Rowley was fishing for bass and was skunked. The water was so clear that the bass were easy to see. Four times Randy threw lures above the back of bass and put the lure right in front of them but had no takers. It was mostly overcast and we had a nice breeze.
5/12/08 Chartered Hybrid Bass Fishing Trip
One officer, four guests (including one first-time guest), and one son (six participants) had a great time at the Annual Chartered Hybrid Bass Fishing Trip on 5/12/08 with guide Jay Garrett on Lake Belton. The group caught their limit of hybrid bass (30) and caught over 50 fish total (a new FCS record)! Thanks to Jim McGee for heading up this trip.
3/28/08 – 3/30/08 Non-Chartered Bay Fishing Trip (sponsored by the Buda Chapter) – Report by David Smith
Two officers and seven first-time guests (nine total participants) had a great time at the 3/28/08 – 3/30/08 Non-Chartered Bay Fishing Trip sponsored by the Buda Chapter.
We left on Friday morning at about 9:00, stopped in Bastrop to pick up Kenney and his boat, stopped in El Campo at Whataburger for lunch, made it to Matagorda, and checked in the house. Friday afternoon we headed out to the south shore of East Bay. One of the boats was giving us fits so it was a slow trip over. When we got to the shoreline several jumped out and waded and the rest drift fished from the boats. Two keeper trout were caught. The water was milky in the bay but clear on the shore. Coley Thompson led a devotional Friday night.
On Saturday morning we awoke to gale force winds. The bay was choppy and milky. We went to the south shoreline again. The water looked trout green but we didn’t have any luck. On Saturday afternoon we had a small feast (grilled pork loins, sausage, and beans). On Saturday evening we went to the diversion channel and picked up some dink trout, rat reds, and plenty of hard heads. The boats split up and after about 30 or 40 minutes, I called the other boat to see how they were doing. They had just spent the last 20 minutes fighting a 4′ – 5′ alligator gar and had gotten it to the boat. Jim Plant had hooked it on a small mullet with no leader and had quite a fight. At about the same time, I accidentally hooked a 4′ – 5′ alligator and had an interesting time getting the hook loose. I led a devotional on things Christians can do on Saturday nights.
Johnny Childress was elected chief cook and bottle washer and did a great job with breakfast and running the grill.
On Sunday morning we went back to the diversion channel and caught 10 or 12 keeper trout. Some of them were pretty nice. We started back home at about 12:30 or so and made it back to the church at about 5:00 PM.
2/9/08 Trout Fishing Trip on the Guadalupe River
Two officers had a great time on the 2/9/08 Trout Fishing Trip on the Guadalupe River. Only one fish was caught but it was a whopper! Mark Dillow caught a 6 – 7 lb. rainbow trout (his largest to date). Mark also hooked another trout but was unable to land it. Mark and Jeff Reece fished on a Guadalupe River Trout Unlimited lease near Sattler, 13 miles west of New Braunfels.
