5/31/25  – Capital City Clays “McBride’s Open” NSCA Sporting Clays Tournament

Seven FCS shooters participated in the Capital City Clays “McBride’s Open” NSCA Tournament in Austin on 5/31/25.  It was calm with the high temperature around 90.  The Main course was set with a higher than normal difficulty.  Most of the crossers were very fast with full spring.  Several stations were set up where the second target was a fast dropper, so if you didn’t shoot the first target quick enough, it was a challenge to get the muzzle in a position for the dropper.  If a shooter wasn’t comfortable with fast droppers that were 35+ yards out, then their scorecard was going to suffer.  Out of 121 shooters, only three shooters scored 90 or higher.  The scores were as follows:

Master Class – Steve Baker – 67/100

AA Class – Lamar Denney – 84/100 – 1st place

4/26/25 – 4/27/25 Student Sporting Clays Shoot

(From Randy Rowley)

Twelve shooters (six on Saturday and six on Sunday), including a first-time guest and two youth guests, had a good time at Capital City Clays in Austin (hosting for the first time, to my knowledge).  Our shooters had a 1:1 or 2:1 student to instructor ratio.

(From Bruce Crockett)

The instructor/student shoot went well today.

I had a 17 yr old instructor for the first stage – Andy Shahidi.  He was actually very good – mature, articulate, and had a good eye for seeing shooting faults.  He made master class in two years and was on the US team that won the world Helice championship in Egypt.  He has been taking shooting lessons from 3 time Olympic Skeet medalist Dan Carlisle, so he already had a good background in fundamentals.

The second instructor was a retired petroleum engineer from Marble Falls.  He showed me how to shoot falling targets using pull away.

The targets were much better this year than last year in San Antonio, and I told the head instructor.  Both student instructors had me shoot the red course and then took me over to the white course for some more challenging targets.  The instructors had carts for us to ride in.  Since the instructor for me and a couple of others were 1:1, I was able to shoot 8 boxes of shells.

(From Russ Gibbs)

Two great instructors this morning!  Since there were only a few students this early, I shot one-on-one with my coach.  Personal coaching.  Very helpful!  Shot 9 boxes of shells!

(From Paul Irwin)

So our first instructor spent most of his time with wife and son since they were beginners.  I wouldn’t have it any other way.  I did tell him I needed help on poppers and he obliged me.  He told me the strategy, and I busted 5 in a row. Mission accomplished!  I was not impressed with his ability to get the beginners on target, but was VERY impressed with his patience and demeanor as well as how he encouraged them.  He did get both of them on target in the end, so all in all it was a success!

When we were checking out, the master instructor asked me if I wanted to go back out.  I said “Sure!”  He then paired me up one on one with the same young man Bruce had.  We blasted through 150 targets and he definitely helped me!  I would not have wanted him with the wife and son so all worked out how it should have.  The older, calmer gentleman we started with was better for them.  The younger, hotshot was better for me.

In the end, we spent about $230 but that included a case of ammo from the pro shop.  Great deal for 3 & 1/2 lessons, around 250 targets, and a case of ammo!

4/19/25 FCS Sporting Clays Shoot

Nine shooters had a good time on the Capital City Clays’ red/corporate/hunter course on a warm and windy day.  Despite the wind, five of the shooters broke 40 birds or better!  At least one shooter couldn’t make the shoot, as there was a train broke down on Decker Ln., due north of Lindell Ln.  The scores are as follows:

Paul Ellis – 43/50

Jeff Morris – 42/50 (his best score, to date)
